The Punimin and the Strelkie have been at odds for over a hundred years. Few even remember how the tension between the two races that inhabit this country even began, but everyone is forced to pick a side.
Actually, their side is picked for them at birth, when every laboring woman is brought to the border between the city, where the Strelkie live and the wilds, where the Punimin live, to give birth.
When the baby is born, the nurses decide whether it should live with the Strelkie or if it has an 'defects' that mean it should be relegated to the Punimin village. Of course, this decision is made entirely on the whim of the nurses, and is often abused so that many of the children are sent to the Punimin and the king, so Ward Harrol can keep a sense of exclusivity in the city.

This is J. K. Rowling’s first novel for adults. It is nothing like the Harry Potter series for children.
The book opens at the home of Barry Fairbrother in the small town of Pagford. It is his anniversary, and his wife wants to go out to celebrate. He is fixated on an article for the newspaper about one of his students on the rowing team, but not wanting to totally disappoint his wife, he agrees to go to the Country Club for a dinner. Once outside the Country Club, he drops dead.
Being a member of the local council, Fairbrother’s death leaves a Casual Vacancy.
The book doesn’t have one main character unless you consider dead Barry Fairbrother to be the main character. Instead, the book has several characters whose lives are all intertwined. At first, it is hard to see the connection, but as the story progresses the reader will see how each character touches the lives of the others.

When the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global pandemic, countries all over the globe went into lockdown. If a business was not deemed essential its doors closed-restaurants, hair salons, clothing boutiques, yarn shops, etc.
The normal we knew was no longer part of our lives. We were all in the same pandemic boat, but our experiences were different. Families and friends could no longer gather or visit loved ones in nursing facilities.
While waiting for some company to develop a vaccine against this deadly virus, people switched to remote work and students went to on-line learning. Some people wore masks and tried to keep a six foot distance from another person and some were pandemic deniers saying it was all a hoax.
Author Peg Nichols wrote about all of this in her book Sidewalk Sales Across America.

The Ancient Egyptians saw their usefulness and didn’t just like them and make an Instagram account for them or develop a sock line with their face on it. They worshipped them. They made temples in their honor. It was a crime to kill them. I feel like we’ve lost touch with this. Did you know Australia is trying to exterminate all stray cats? Supposedly it is because they are hurting the wild bird population. How is this not a recipe for trouble when they wipe out cats and start to realize all the unseen good they do? Like how we hate bees but the earth would crumble if they went extinct (more on this later). Moral of the story: cats are important, and their viral videos are what hold the Internet together!...

While landscaping on the Mount of Olives, Dante Leon encounters a Bedouin man who insists that he discovered, while exploring a Qumran cave, a map showing where Jesus was really crucified. To prove him wrong, he digs in that spot and finds five pieces of petrified wood as well as a scroll written by Joseph of Arimathea. A deaf and mute lost orphan girl encounters Dante, who cures her with prayer and one of the artifacts. A blind boy is similarly cured. Dante and his family run tests on these artifacts and conclude they have found the True Cross. Terrorists are out to kill Dante's daughter as well as the pope who is about to announce to the world that these wooden pieces, when put together, form the crossbeam of Christ.
According to Robert Iger, CEO of the Walt Disney Company, the 8 Principles to Become a Better Leader are:
This is a leadership seminar in the form of a book. Every leader, including you if you are self-employed, should read this book and practice these principles.
Robert Iger inherited the Walt Disney stories: Davy Crocket, Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty and so many more. He stressed innovate or die. Iger never looked back, only forward. Using the eight principles, he developed three goals for the company: build a good quality brand, embrace technology, and go internationally.
Every writer should strive for the same three goals (of course you can have others, but hey, these have worked for Disney). Your work and your reputation become your brand. Technology is always changing with new software to use in creating your work and new platforms on which to promote it. If an author can go internationally, he/she will probably become a best-selling author. What more can an individual strive for?
